This past August, the Michigan Labor History Society held its annual Labor Day Mobilization Luncheon, celebrating organized labor’s role in Michigan electoral politics. Hosted by UAW Region 1 in Warren, the MLHS welcomed featured speakers Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Region 1 Director LaShawn English. Secretary Benson discussed the preparations being made by her office to make sure Michigan’s elections continue to be safe and accessible, as well advising attendees on how to make sure they can participate in the electoral process. Director English spoke more directly on organized labor’s role in electing leaders who will fight for the rights of working people. Together, the two speakers offered a vision and insights for a brighter future.
The Labor Day Mobilization Luncheon helps raise awareness for the Detroit Labor Day march, announcing the theme and revving up metro Detroit’s labor community for the holiday celebration.
