SUMMARY:Eugene V. Debs Memorial Kazoo Night 2026
DESCRIPTION:Join the Michigan Labor History Society on May Day as we continue the revival of Eugene V. Debs Memorial Kazoo Night! Taking place the evening of Friday\, May 1\, 2026\, at Comerica Park during the Tigers vs. Rangers baseball game\, we will celebrate the labor movement and the legacy of hero to the workingman\, Eugene V. Debs. \nTo participate and get a kazoo\, purchase your tickets here. \nFor the just the third time in a quarter century\, you have the chance to participate in one of Detroit’s proudest/silliest exercises in labor solidarity! This event originally ran from the early eighties to 1999\, named after Debs — the labor activist\, socialist\, and 5-time presidential candidate. The past two year’s events have been grand slams\, with 70+ people joining the kazoo orchestras in perfect disharmony. As an added bonus\, we are excited to host the event on International Workers’ Day\, following a special May Day event hosted by other labor organizations earlier that day. \nPlease share this event with your friends\, and anyone you know who loves the Tigers and fights for a brighter future.

SUMMARY:The Michigan Labor History Society Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Michigan Labor History Society on June 17th for our 2025 Annual Meeting\, featuring guest speaker labor educator and union activist Steve Babson presenting: \n\n\nTruth to Power: When Coleman Young Defied the Red Scare: \n\n\nWhen the House Un-American Activities Committee came to Detroit in 1952\, Coleman Young’s defiance of HUAC’s right-wing inquisitors won him a lasting reputation for courage and political candor. Learn how Young and his fellow travelers resisted the Red Scare\, and how their story helps us prepare for the struggles we face today. \n\n\nIn the current political climate\, Steve’s talk about labor standing up to political demagogues is more relevant than ever. Steve Babson has authored some of the best works of Michigan labor history\, including Working Detroit: The Making of a Union Town\, Lean Work: Empowerment and Exploitation in the Global Auto Industry\, and The Color of Law: Ernie Goodman and the Struggle for Labor and Civil Rights in Detroit. \n\n\nThe annual meeting will take place on Tuesday\, June 17\, at 6:00 pm\, at Operating Engineers Education Center in Detroit’s Corktown neighborhood. Admission is FREE and light refreshments will be served. A brief annual business meeting will follow. \n\n\nYour attendance and support help us continue to uplift the history of the working people of Michigan. Our activities include maintaining the “Transcending” Labor Legacy Landmark at Detroit’s Hart Plaza\, hosting thoughtful historical programming\, and partnering with community organizations on various local labor history initiatives.
